Function of the Cylinder Head Gasket

The cylinder head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and the block, keeping combustion pressure inside each cylinder and the coolant and oil galleries separate from each other and from the bores. On the GW4D20M turbodiesel a failed head gasket shows up as white exhaust smoke, a coolant level that keeps dropping with no visible leak, oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, bubbles in the expansion tank, overheating and a loss of compression. It is a one-use multi-layer steel gasket, so fit a new one whenever the head comes off, together with new cylinder head bolts, on a head that has been checked for flatness.

Fits the 2.0 GW4D20M turbodiesel engine as used in the GWM P-Series Commercial and Passenger bakkies sold in South Africa from 2020 onwards. Supplied as the current GWM revision, which replaces the earlier gasket on all P-Series engines.
