Description

Function of the Diesel Injector Pump

The diesel injector pump (high-pressure fuel pump) pressurises diesel fuel to the extreme pressures required for direct injection — often exceeding 1,600 bar (23,000 psi) in common-rail systems. It delivers precisely timed, metered fuel to each injector through the common fuel rail. A failing injector pump causes hard starting, rough running, power loss, black smoke, and can contaminate the fuel system with metal debris.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

  • P0087 — Fuel rail/system pressure too low (worn pump cannot build pressure)
  • P1196 [P119600] — Rail pressure build-up failed at normal fuel level
  • P1036 [P103600] — Negative rail-pressure feedback deviation too large (cannot reach target)
  • P0088 [P008800] — Fuel rail pressure too high (metering/overdelivery)
