Function of the Oil Cooler
The engine oil cooler is a compact water-to-oil heat exchanger mounted on the engine block at the oil filter housing. Engine coolant flows through one side of the cooler and engine oil through the other, so heat is carried out of the oil and into the cooling system before the oil returns to the bearings, camshafts and turbocharger. On a turbo diesel like the GW4D20M this keeps the oil within its working temperature range under towing, heavy loads and long highway runs, protecting the turbo and stopping the oil from breaking down and forming sludge. A failed or leaking oil cooler shows up as oil leaking at the filter housing, oil in the coolant (a dark or milky expansion tank), coolant in the oil (creamy residue under the oil filler cap), overheating, or a steady loss of coolant with no visible external leak. Because oil and coolant mixing quickly damages bearings and the turbocharger, a suspect oil cooler should be replaced without delay, together with fresh oil, a new oil filter and a cooling system flush.
