Description
Function of the Ignition Coil
The ignition coil transforms the battery’s low voltage (12V) into the extremely high voltage (20,000-40,000V) needed to create a spark across the spark plug gap. This spark ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. Modern engines use individual coils for each cylinder (coil-on-plug). A faulty ignition coil causes misfires on the affected cylinder, rough idle, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light.
