Description
Function of the Brake Master Cylinder
The brake master cylinder converts the force from the brake pedal (assisted by the vacuum booster) into hydraulic pressure that is delivered through the brake lines to the calipers and wheel cylinders at each wheel. It uses twin pistons in a dual-circuit design so that if one circuit fails, the other still provides braking. A failing master cylinder causes a soft or sinking brake pedal, uneven or reduced braking, brake fluid loss past the internal seals, and in severe cases complete loss of hydraulic pressure to one circuit. Replacing a worn master cylinder restores firm pedal feel and full braking performance.
