Description
Function of the Crankshaft Position Sensor
The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft by reading a toothed reluctor ring mounted on the crank, and sends this signal to the engine ECU many times per second. The ECU uses the CKP signal to determine injection timing, ignition timing, and engine speed — it is one of the most critical inputs the ECU receives, and without a valid signal the engine will not start or will stall and fail to restart. A failing crankshaft position sensor on the GW4G15 typically causes hard starting or a complete no-start, the engine stalling while driving and refusing to restart, the rev counter dropping to zero while the engine is still running, erratic idle, and hesitation or loss of power under acceleration. Fitting a correctly calibrated replacement sensor restores the ECU’s ability to read crank position and timing, returning normal starting and running.
Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.
- P0335 — crankshaft position sensor circuit: no signal received (sensor not producing a pulse at all)
- P0336 — crankshaft position sensor circuit: range or performance fault (signal present but erratic or implausible)
- P0016 — crankshaft/camshaft timing correlation out of range (crank and cam signals out of phase — can be caused by either position sensor or a stretched timing chain; if P0016 appears alongside P0335 or P0336, address the crank sensor first)
Why order it from Partszar
A faulty sensor, coil or starter feeds the engine the wrong signal, so it runs rich, misfires, will not start or drops into limp mode, and the fault light stays on until it is fixed. Once this is replaced the ECU gets what it expects and the vehicle runs the way it did when it was new.
