Description
Function of the Cylinder Liner
The cylinder liner is the wear surface in which the piston travels within the engine block. It forms the sealed bore that contains combustion pressure and guides the piston through its stroke, while its inner surface is honed to retain a controlled oil film for lubrication and ring sealing. Cylinder liners must withstand extreme temperatures and pressures while resisting bore wear, scoring, and distortion to maintain compression and consistent piston-to-wall clearance. A worn, scored, or cracked liner leads to compression loss, excessive oil consumption, blow-by and reduced engine performance.
