Description

Function of the AC Compressor

The AC compressor is the belt-driven pump on the side of the engine that squeezes the refrigerant gas and pushes it round the air conditioning system, so it is the part that decides whether the vents blow cold or just move warm air. When a compressor is on its way out you typically get air conditioning that blows cool for a few minutes and then goes warm, a clutch that clicks in and out or refuses to engage at all, a rattle or grinding noise from the front of the engine that stops the moment the aircon is switched off, a squealing belt when the clutch engages, or oily refrigerant residue around the compressor body. A seized compressor also snaps or shreds the drive belt, and metal from a worn compressor travels through the condenser and expansion valve, so replace it as soon as the symptoms start and always have the system flushed, the receiver drier replaced and the refrigerant charged by a qualified aircon technician when the new unit is fitted. This is a complete aftermarket compressor assembly with the clutch, pulley and electrical connector fitted, ready to bolt on. Fits the GW4D20 2.0 turbo diesel engine family, both the VGT and WGT versions, as used in the GWM Steed 5, GWM Steed 5E, GWM Steed 6 and GWM Hover H5 2.0 diesel.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

  • P0532 [P053200] — A/C refrigerant pressure sensor feedback below lower limit
  • P0533 [P053300] — A/C refrigerant pressure sensor feedback above upper limit
  • P0645 [P064500] — A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit open
  • P0646 [P064600] — A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit short to ground
  • P0647 [P064700] — A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit short to power

The pressure codes usually mean the system is low on gas or over-pressurised rather than a failed compressor, and the relay codes point at the clutch relay, fuse and wiring. Check the refrigerant charge, the pressure switch and the clutch coil before condemning the compressor, then replace it if the clutch will not hold, the pulley bearing is noisy or the pump no longer builds pressure.

Why order it from Partszar

A worn engine part rarely fails on its own; it loads the parts around it until they fail too. Replacing it when the first symptoms show is what keeps a small repair from becoming a big one, and the engine runs smooth and quiet again once it is done.

  • Fitment checked before it is listed. Every part is cross-referenced against the official parts catalogue and OEM part number so it fits first time. If your vehicle is listed above, this is the one you need. Not sure? Send us your VIN using the contact form below and we confirm the exact part for free, no obligation.
  • Dispatched fast, tracked to your door. In-stock parts leave within 1 to 2 business days and reach you anywhere in South Africa in 2 to 5 business days with tracking. Back-order parts are sourced directly from our supplier, typically 3 to 4 weeks, and we keep you updated by email.
  • Honest about what you get. This is an aftermarket part, built to the original specification without the OEM logo on the casing, which is what keeps the price down.
  • Decide with confidence. Selected parts carry our 6-month limited guarantee when fitted by an RMI-approved mechanic. Not sure about anything? Contact us below before you order.

It is normal to second-guess a purchase this size. The short version: it is cross-referenced to your engine, it is the part the workshop calls for, and if you send us your VIN through the form below first there is nothing left to doubt.
