Function of the EGR Valve

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve recirculates a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This dilutes the incoming air charge, lowering combustion temperatures and significantly reducing harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. A stuck-open EGR valve causes rough idle, stalling, and poor performance. A stuck-closed valve increases NOx emissions and may cause engine knock. Carbon buildup is the most common cause of EGR failure in diesel engines.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

• P0403 [P040300] — EGR (high-pressure) actuator drive circuit — open
• P0489 [P048900] — EGR actuator drive circuit — short to ground
• P0405 [P040500] — EGR position sensor circuit — low / open
• P0402 [P040200] — EGR flow control error — intake air insufficient
