Description

Function of the EGR Valve

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve recirculates a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This dilutes the incoming air charge, lowering combustion temperatures and significantly reducing harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. A stuck-open EGR valve causes rough idle, stalling, and poor performance. A stuck-closed valve increases NOx emissions and may cause engine knock. Carbon buildup is the most common cause of EGR failure in diesel engines.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.

  • P0401 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected (valve stuck closed / clogged)
  • P0403 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit / Open
  • P0404 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance
  • P0405 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low (position feedback)
