Description
Function of the Flywheel
The flywheel is a heavy rotating disc bolted to the crankshaft that stores rotational energy to smooth out engine power pulses. It provides the friction surface against which the clutch disc engages, and its ring gear is used by the starter motor to crank the engine. A damaged flywheel causes clutch juddering, vibration, difficulty starting (damaged ring gear teeth), and a knocking sound from the bellhousing.
