Description
Function of the Timing Belt
The timing belt synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine’s valves open and close at precisely the right moment. This is a critical wear component with a defined service interval — typically every 60,000 to 100,000 km. A snapped timing belt on an interference engine causes the pistons to strike the valves, resulting in catastrophic and expensive engine damage. Preventive replacement at the correct interval is one of the most important maintenance tasks for belt-driven engines.
