Description
Function of the Timing Chain
The timing chain synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring valves open and close at precisely the right moment. Unlike timing belts, chains are designed to last longer, but they do stretch with age and mileage. A stretched timing chain causes retarded valve timing, reduced engine performance, rattling noise, and can eventually skip teeth, causing catastrophic valve-to-piston contact on interference engines.
