Description

Function of the GWM P-Series GW4D20M Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

The mass air flow sensor (air-flow meter) sits in the intake duct between the air filter and the turbo, and continuously measures the mass of air being drawn into the engine, sending this reading to the engine ECU. On a diesel the ECU relies on this air-mass signal to control EGR flow, to limit fuelling and smoke under load, and to manage DPF regeneration, so the correct amount of fuel is matched to the air actually entering the cylinders. A faulty or out-of-range sensor can cause loss of power, limp mode, excessive smoke, rough running, poor fuel economy, disabled EGR/DPF functions, and a warning light, because the ECU can no longer trust the airflow it is reading. Fitting a correctly calibrated sensor restores accurate air-mass feedback and proper fuelling.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

  • P0102 [P010200] — air-flow meter open circuit (sensor chip feedback fails)
  • P0103 [P010300] — air-flow meter short circuit (sensor chip feedback fails)
  • P1104 [P110400] — negative correction too high across full flow range (sensor faulty or wrongly fitted / harness fault)
  • P1105 [P110500] — positive correction too high across full flow range (sensor faulty or serious intake leak / harness fault)
