The oil pressure sensor monitors the engine’s oil pressure and sends this information to the dashboard gauge or warning light. Adequate oil pressure is essential for engine lubrication — low pressure means insufficient oil reaching critical components. A faulty sensor gives false readings, either failing to warn of genuinely low pressure or causing an unnecessary warning. Always investigate an oil pressure warning immediately, as running without oil pressure destroys an engine in minutes.
