Function of the Power Steering Belt

The power steering belt drives the power steering pump from the crankshaft pulley, providing hydraulic pressure for assisted steering. A worn or loose belt causes squealing noise (especially on startup or when turning), heavy steering, and eventual loss of power assistance. A snapped belt results in immediate loss of power steering — the vehicle can still be steered but requires much greater effort.
