Description
Function of the Alternator
The alternator generates electrical power to run the vehicle’s electrical systems and charge the battery while the engine is running. Driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft, it converts mechanical energy into alternating current (AC), which is rectified to direct current (DC). A failing alternator causes dimming lights, a dead battery, warning lights on the dashboard, electrical system malfunctions, and eventually a no-start condition.
