Function of the High-Pressure Injector Pump

The high-pressure injector pump is the heart of the diesel fuel system, pressurising fuel to the extreme levels needed for efficient combustion. It delivers precisely metered fuel at pressures exceeding 1,600 bar through the common rail to each injector. A failing pump causes hard starting, rough running, power loss, excessive smoke, and can contaminate the fuel system with metal debris.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

• P0087 — Fuel rail/system pressure too low (worn pump cannot build pressure)
• P1196 [P119600] — Rail pressure build-up failed at normal fuel level
• P1036 [P103600] — Negative rail-pressure feedback deviation too large (cannot reach target)
• P0088 [P008800] — Fuel rail pressure too high (metering/overdelivery)
