Function of the Camshaft Position Sensor

The camshaft position sensor (CMP) is critical for engine performance. It monitors the rotation and position of the camshaft and communicates this information to the engine control unit (ECU). This allows precise control of fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and engine efficiency, ensuring smooth operation and preventing misfires. A faulty camshaft sensor causes rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, engine stalling, and a check engine light.

OBD Fault Codes Related to the Mahindra NEF Camshaft Position Sensor

Two of the most common OBD-II fault codes associated with a failing or faulty camshaft position sensor on the Mahindra NEF engine are P-0340 and P-0341.

P-0340 — Camshaft Speed Sensor (Phase Sensor): No Signal

This code is logged when the ECU receives no signal at all from the camshaft position sensor. It typically indicates a failed sensor, a broken or disconnected wiring harness, or a damaged connector. When this code is active, the engine may crank but fail to start, or it may stall unexpectedly, since the ECU cannot determine camshaft position and therefore cannot accurately control fuel injection timing.

P-0341 — Camshaft Speed Sensor (Phase Sensor): Wrong Signal

Unlike P-0340, this code means the ECU is receiving a signal, but the signal is erratic, out of range, or inconsistent with the crankshaft position signal. Common causes include a worn reluctor ring, a weak or failing sensor, intermittent wiring faults, or excessive air gap between the sensor tip and the camshaft target wheel. Symptoms often include rough idling, misfires, hesitation under acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.

In both cases, replacing the camshaft position sensor with a quality replacement unit is the recommended first step before investigating wiring or reluctor ring damage. Always clear the fault codes after replacement and confirm the fault does not return before returning the vehicle to normal operation.
