Function of the Camshaft Position Sensor

The camshaft position sensor (CMP) is critical for engine performance. It monitors the rotation and position of the camshaft and communicates this information to the engine control unit (ECU). This allows precise control of fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and engine efficiency, ensuring smooth operation and preventing misfires. A faulty camshaft sensor causes rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, engine stalling, and a check engine light.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.

• P0340 — Camshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor) — no signal
• P0341 — Camshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Range/Performance — signal implausible vs crankshaft
• P0342 — Camshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Low (short to ground / open)
• P0343 — Camshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit High (short to battery)
