Function of the Brake Shoes

Brake shoes are curved friction components used in drum brake systems, typically fitted to the rear wheels. When the brake pedal is pressed, a hydraulic wheel cylinder pushes the shoes outward against the inside of the brake drum, creating stopping force. Worn brake shoes cause reduced rear braking, a scraping sound, handbrake not holding, and can score the brake drum surface.
