The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine, radiator, and heater core, maintaining optimal operating temperature. Driven by the timing belt, timing chain, or accessory belt, it ensures consistent coolant flow at all engine speeds. A failing water pump causes overheating, coolant leaks, a grinding or whining noise from the front of the engine, and can lead to head gasket or engine failure.
