Description
Function of the Big End Bearings
Big end bearings (also called rod bearings) sit at the bottom of each connecting rod where it attaches to the crankshaft. They allow the connecting rod to pivot smoothly on the crankshaft journal while supporting the massive forces generated during combustion. Like main bearings, they rely on a pressurised oil film to prevent metal-to-metal contact. Worn big end bearings cause a distinct knocking sound that increases with engine speed, and can lead to connecting rod failure if ignored.
