Description
Function of the MAF Sensor
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine. The ECU uses this data to calculate the precise amount of fuel to inject for optimal combustion. A faulty MAF sensor causes poor fuel economy, rough idle, hesitation, stalling, black smoke, and a check engine light. MAF sensors can sometimes be cleaned with specialised cleaner before replacement is necessary.
Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.
- P0100 — Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit
- P0101 — Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance
- P0102 — Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
- P0103 — Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input
