Description
Function of the Crankshaft Position Sensor
The crankshaft position sensor, also called the engine speed sensor, provides the engine control unit with a signal used to determine crankshaft speed and position. The control unit uses this information to coordinate fuel injection. A faulty sensor or its wiring can cause starting difficulties, intermittent stalling or a loss of engine-speed signal. Check the connector and wiring during diagnosis before replacing the sensor.
Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character codes below. These are general crankshaft sensor codes; the codes reported depend on the vehicle’s ECU.
- P0335 — Crankshaft position sensor A circuit fault
- P0336 — Crankshaft position sensor A signal range/performance fault
- P0337 — Crankshaft position sensor A input too low
- P0338 — Crankshaft position sensor A input too high
- P0339 — Crankshaft position sensor A intermittent signal
Check the sensor connector and wiring before replacement. A fault code alone does not confirm that the sensor has failed.
