Function of the Timing Belt Tensioner

The timing belt tensioner maintains the correct amount of tension on the timing belt throughout its service life. Proper tension prevents the belt from slipping or jumping teeth, which would throw off the synchronisation between crankshaft and camshaft. A failing tensioner causes belt flutter, a rattling or whining noise from the timing area, and can lead to timing belt failure. Always replace the tensioner when fitting a new timing belt.
