Function of the EGR Cooler

The EGR cooler uses engine coolant to cool the recirculated exhaust gases before they re-enter the intake manifold. Cooler exhaust gas is more effective at reducing combustion temperatures and NOx emissions. A leaking EGR cooler allows coolant into the exhaust or intake system, causing white smoke, coolant loss, overheating, and potential engine damage.
