Description
MG 6 Key (Smart Key / Remote with Transponder)
Replacement smart key for the MG 6, supplied as a new key body containing the immobiliser transponder and remote-locking electronics. The key must be programmed to your specific vehicle’s immobiliser system before it will start the engine — programming is not done by us and must be carried out by an MG dealer or an RMI Approved auto-locksmith with the correct equipment.
What’s included: the key body with electronic transponder and remote buttons.
What’s not included: programming to your vehicle, the metal emergency blade cut to your lock (if applicable), or the ignition switch electronics.
Function of the Vehicle Key
The vehicle key contains an immobiliser transponder chip that communicates with the engine control unit to authorise starting. When you dock the key or press start, the ECU sends a challenge signal to the transponder; if the key returns the correct rolling-code response, the immobiliser releases and the engine is permitted to crank and run. Without a correctly programmed key, the immobiliser system prevents the engine from starting as an anti-theft measure. A replacement key must be programmed to the vehicle’s immobiliser system by a specialist before it will work.
When a key has failed or has lost sync with the immobiliser you’ll typically see:
- Engine cranks but won’t start — the starter turns but the engine doesn’t fire
- “Engine Disabled” or immobiliser warning message on the dashboard
- Dashboard wakes up normally when you dock the key, but the car won’t start
- Remote buttons stop working (locking, unlocking, boot release) even when the battery is new
- Intermittent failure to recognise the key — works some days, not others
How to Check if You Need a New Key
(No scan tool required)
Before ordering, run this quick 30-second test on your MG 6 to confirm the problem is the key and not the ignition switch.
- Sit in the driver’s seat with the key/remote in your hand.
- Insert or dock the key as you normally would.
- Don’t press start yet — just watch the dashboard and try to turn the steering wheel.
Then match what you see to one of the two scenarios below.
✅ Scenario A — Your key has failed (this is what you need)
- The steering wheel locks when you dock the key.
- Dashboard engine warning lights come on after a couple of seconds.
- The car wakes up electrically, but still won’t crank or start when you press start.
- You may see an “Engine Disabled” message on the dashboard.
❌ Scenario B — Your ignition switch has failed (a new key will NOT fix it)
- The steering wheel still turns freely — it does not lock.
- No warning lights appear on the dashboard.
- The car shows no sign of waking up electrically when you dock the key.
If your symptoms match Scenario A, you need a new programmed key — this listing is the right part.
If they match Scenario B, you have an ignition switch electronics failure and a new key will not solve it. You’ll need our MG 6 Ignition Switch Repair Kit instead — please contact us before ordering so we can confirm the correct part.
If you’re not 100% sure which scenario matches, send us a photo or message describing what happens when you dock the key, and we’ll help you identify the correct part before you order.
