Description
Function of the Main Bearings
Main bearings support the crankshaft within the engine block, allowing it to rotate smoothly under tremendous load. These precision-engineered bearing shells are coated with a soft metal layer that absorbs minor imperfections and distributes oil evenly. They maintain a thin film of pressurised oil between the crankshaft journals and the block, preventing metal-to-metal contact. Worn main bearings produce a deep knocking sound, low oil pressure, and can lead to catastrophic crankshaft failure if not replaced.
