Function of the Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor (lambda sensor) monitors the oxygen content in the exhaust gases. The ECU uses this data to continuously adjust the air-fuel ratio for optimal combustion efficiency and emissions control. The upstream sensor (before the catalytic converter) controls fuelling, while the downstream sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency. A faulty oxygen sensor causes poor fuel economy, rough idle, increased emissions, and a check engine light.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.

• P0136 — O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
• P0137 — O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
• P0138 — O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
• P0140 — O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
