Description
Function of the Turbocharger
The turbocharger uses exhaust gas energy to compress intake air, forcing more air into the engine for significantly increased power output. Exhaust gases spin a turbine connected to a compressor, which pressurises the intake air. A turbo can increase engine power by 30-40% without increasing engine size. Turbo failure causes loss of power, excessive smoke (blue or black), whining or grinding noise, and oil leaks into the intake or exhaust system.
