Description
Function of the Connecting Rod
The connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft, converting the piston’s linear motion into the crankshaft’s rotational motion. It must withstand extreme compressive and tensile forces with every combustion cycle — thousands of times per minute. A bent or damaged connecting rod causes engine knocking, vibration, low compression, and can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Connecting rods are typically replaced during engine rebuilds or after hydro-lock events.
