The bypass roller (idler pulley) guides the alternator belt along its correct path, maintaining proper belt wrap around each driven pulley. It contains a bearing that allows the belt to pass over it with minimal friction. A seized or noisy idler pulley causes belt squeal, premature belt wear, and can lead to belt failure.
