Description
Function of the Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is a hydraulic pump driven by the engine via a serpentine belt that pressurises power steering fluid and delivers it to the steering rack or steering gear box. This hydraulic pressure reduces the effort required to turn the steering wheel, providing controlled, responsive steering at all speeds. A failing power steering pump causes heavy or stiff steering, a whining or groaning noise that increases with steering input, fluid leaks under the vehicle, or complete loss of power assistance requiring significantly increased steering effort.
