Function of the Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) monitors the rotational speed and position of the crankshaft. It sends this critical data to the engine control unit (ECU), which uses it to calculate ignition timing and fuel injection timing. Without an accurate crank signal, the engine cannot fire at the correct moment. A faulty crank sensor causes hard starting, engine stalling, misfires, intermittent no-start conditions, and a check engine light.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader displays the standard 5-character code shown below.

• P0335 — Crankshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit — no signal
• P0336 — Crankshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Range/Performance — implausible signal / missing teeth
• P0337 — Crankshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Low (short to ground / open)
• P0338 — Crankshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit High (short to battery)
