Description
Function of the Timing Chain Tensioner
The timing chain tensioner maintains the correct tension on the timing chain, preventing slack that could cause the chain to jump teeth. Most tensioners use oil pressure and a ratchet mechanism to automatically compensate for chain stretch over time. A failing tensioner causes a rattling noise on startup (before oil pressure builds), and can lead to timing chain skip and engine damage.
