Function of the Starter Motor

The starter motor turns the GW4D20M 2.0 turbo diesel engine over when you turn the key, driving the pinion into the flywheel ring gear and spinning the engine fast enough to fire. When a starter is on its way out you typically hear a single loud click or a rapid clicking from the solenoid, a grinding or whirring noise as the pinion fails to engage cleanly, or nothing at all even though the battery is fully charged and the dash lights are bright. A starter that drags, spins without engaging or only works on the second or third try will eventually leave the vehicle stranded, so replace it as soon as the symptoms start rather than waiting for a complete no-start. This is a 12 V unit manufactured by JHECO with the solenoid, pinion and mounting flange to suit the GW4D20M block. Fits the GW4D20M 2.0 turbo diesel engine as used in the GWM P-Series Commercial and GWM P-Series Passenger single cab and double cab bakkies.

Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

A generic OBD reader shows the 5-character code; the GWM system stores the 7-character extended form shown in brackets.

• P0615 [P061500] — Starter relay control circuit open
• P0616 [P061600] — Starter relay control circuit short to ground
• P0617 [P061700] — Starter relay control circuit short to power supply

These codes point at the starter relay and its wiring rather than the starter itself, so check the relay, fuse, battery terminals and the heavy cable to the solenoid before condemning the starter motor.
